Avenel, Woodbridge, NJ

Avenel, Woodbridge, NJ, is a census-designated place and unincorporated area located within Woodbridge Township, in Middlesex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 United States Census there were 18,229 people, 5,003 households and 4,442 families residing in Avenel.

There are also: Avenel station on the Northeast Corridor; a post office; Avenel Fire Company; two branch libraries; three parks; several churches, including St. Gabriel’s Church (Roman Catholic), Avenel Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church-Avenel (PCUSA), and Our Lady of the Presentation (Catholic); Kmart Plaza shopping center; the Woodbridge Mall; a museum dedicated to the Edison family; Avenel Street Park; the Woodbridge Community Center; a large cemetery, St. Gertrude’s Cemetery (Roman Catholic); Avenel Park Golf Club which is now closed but was once one of three courses that made up the Tournament Players Club network operated by PGA Tour player Deane Beman.

Avenel has a volunteer fire department with about 140 members. The EMS division has a paid paramedic supervisor and certified firefighters/EMTs. The Avenel Volunteer Fire Company #1 was organized on September 2, 1953, with twenty-five men who originally met in the back of a local restaurant known as “The Egg & I”. Since that time the AVFC has grown into one of the largest fire companies in the state (New Jersey) with over 140 members. The AVFC is an all-volunteer department whose goal is to provide professional emergency services to the township of Avenel and surrounding communities.

The Avenel Fire Department has three different station locations; Cozzens Lane Station located on Cozzens Lane just off of RT-27, the Woodbridge Avenue Station located on Woodbridge Ave., and the Linden Ave. The station is located on Linden ave just across from Avenel Park. The company has a total of five fire trucks which consist of two engines, one quint, one snorkle truck/tower ladder, and an all-terrain vehicle that is carried on one of the engines. They also have two rescue trucks, known as “rescue-1” and “rescue-2”.

Main attractions in Avenel, include Woodbridge Mall, Avenel Street Park, The Avenel Yacht Club.

The main roads that run through Avenel are Route 27 and Route 1. To the west of Avenel is Rahway River Parkway Rail-to-Trail which will eventually run from Cranford to South Amboy. There are other rail lines passing through Avenel, but they are no longer in use.
