Junk Removal in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, NY

Fort Wadsworth is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is located at the southern end of the island near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Fort Wadsworth is home to a military base.

Fort Wadsworth has an edge in sustainability and is considered a “Green Power Community.” Fort Wadsworth was the first military base to receive such recognition from the EPA; its commitment to using renewable energy sources includes solar panels, wind turbines, and rainwater harvesting systems. The community along with the U.S. Army are also committed to using bicycles as a form of transportation within the base.

Many of Fort Wadsworth’s surrounding properties include Bay Street Landing, Snug Harbor Cultural Center (which includes the Staten Island Children’s Museum), Historic Richmond Town (a living history museum that has 20 buildings on its property), Conference House Park, Cedar Grove Cemetery, The New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, and Conference House.

Fort Wadsworth has many activities for residents to engage in, whether it be a religious activity, a dance class, or a children’s art workshop; there is something going on almost every day at Fort Wadsworth for people of all ages.

Fort Wadsworth was also formally known as Camp Wadsworth and Sandy Hook Proving Ground (the name coming from its original use in New Jersey). The current fort sits on 1,117 acres and includes 127 historic buildings. Fort Wadsworth was created in 1890 by the Federal Government to protect New York City and was used during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.

Notable Places

Fort Wadsworth is home to some unique military cemeteries. There are seven cemeteries located on Fort Wadsworth, with graves dating back to the Civil War.

One of Fort Wadsworth’s most notable features is Battery Weed, once the site of the Sandy Hook Proving Ground (a division of West Point that was used in weapons development). The U.S. Army announced plans for preserving Battery Weed in 1990 and it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Fort Wadsworth lighthouse is located just north of Fort Wadsworth, on the other side of the bridge. It has been active since 1860 and is considered one of Staten Island’s five historic lighthouses. The lighthouse also serves as a memorial to the victims of September 11th, 2001 (a cross made of steel beams from ground zero adorns the top of the structure).

Some notable locations within Fort Wadsworth are the Community Center, which has an indoor pool and offers senior activities; the Veterinary Services Field Office (a veterinary office for military working dogs); Sergeant Collins Gymnasium; The Exchange (the base store); Child Development Centers; Theater; Motor Pool Garage; Library Annex; Commissary Store; 46th Transportation Battalion, 593rd Transportation Detachment; and the Chapel.

Adjacent to Fort Wadsworth is the Staten Island campus of St. John’s University.
