Eltingville is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is considered to be a part of the larger New Dorp section. Eltingville is located on Staten Island’s south shore near the Staten Island Expressway and Arthur Kill Road.

Historically, Eltingville was a part of the town of New Dorp but seceded in 1959 to become its own community. It is named after Jacob Elting, who bought much of what is now known as Eltingville from the local natives in 1675.

In 2002, over 1/3 of Eltingville’s population was made up of Dutch Americans. In 2003, that number fell to just below 1/2 because many American-born individuals moved into Eltingville and brought their families with them.

Eltingville was a major point in battles during the American Revolution and the Civil War. Fort Hill, which was built during the Revolutionary War, can still be visited today.


Eltingville is served by the Staten Island district of New York City Department of Education and is home to P.S.48 (Philip Lumbard School), I.S.51 (Richmondtown Preparatory), and St. Anselm’s Catholic Academy.

It also has a private school for pre-K through grade 12 students founded in 1941. It was named after Saint Joseph because of the belief that he would provide protection against earthquakes, which are common in the New York area.

Eltingville is also home to Susan E. Wagner High School, known for its high level of academics.

Notable Places

Famous landmarks in Eltingville include the Eltingville Club, a social club founded in 1961 and known for its members’ love of sports. It has been featured on television shows such as Saturday Night Live and Law & Order.

In addition to the Eltingville Club, many notable restaurants have been established in the neighborhood itself or nearby, including Carmine’s on the Bay, Bobby Van’s Steakhouse, Cheeseburger Baby, and the original location of Fuddruckers.

Eltingville is also home to St. Clare’s church.

The Eltingville area has both road and rail access. The Staten Island Expressway, which is part of Interstate 278, provides car travel to the neighborhood. It also has several bus routes nearby.

The Eltingville train station provides residents with quick access to New Jersey via NJ Transit. The Staten Island Mall is located nearby as well. Shopping destinations around Eltingville include notable stores such as Best Buy, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Kmart, and Target.
