History

The area’s earliest use was as a lookout for Native Americans and then by colonists who wanted to monitor enemy ships during the Revolutionary War. In the 19th century, Grymes Hill attracted wealthy families that built large estates on its hillsides. During this time it also became a popular summer resort with grand hotels and Victorian-style cottages. The area received its name from Phillip Verno, a French Hugenot who settled here in 1838 and eventually built several mansions that remained into the early 20th century.

Today, Grymes Hill has maintained its quiet residential character, much as it was 100 years ago. The development of nearby St. George in the 20th century lessened Grymes Hill’s appeal as a resort destination, but its proximity to beaches on Raritan Bay and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge has made it one of Staten Island’s most desirable residential neighborhoods.
