Grymes Hill is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is the most eastern neighborhood on the island. The neighborhood of Grymes Hill is bordered by the neighborhoods of Clifton, Sunnyside, and West Brighton. It is a mostly flat area, with some hills towards the center. A notable landmark in Grymes Hill is Wagner College which sits high on a hill overlooking New York harbor.
Grymes Hill was ranked as one of “Conde Nast Traveler’s” Top U.S. Neighborhoods in 2008. Grymes Hill sits at the highest point along Staten Island with views of New Jersey and North Brooklyn. Its steep hills that hug the waterfront with expansive vistas over Upper New York Bay make this a scenic neighborhood to wander through.
The area’s earliest use was as a lookout for Native Americans and then by colonists who wanted to monitor enemy ships during the Revolutionary War. In the 19th century, Grymes Hill attracted wealthy families that built large estates on its hillsides. During this time it also became a popular summer resort with grand hotels and Victorian-style cottages. The area received its name from Phillip Verno, a French Hugenot who settled here in 1838 and eventually built several mansions that remained into the early 20th century.
Today, Grymes Hill has maintained its quiet residential character, much as it was 100 years ago. The development of nearby St. George in the 20th century lessened Grymes Hill’s appeal as a resort destination, but its proximity to beaches on Raritan Bay and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge has made it one of Staten Island’s most desirable residential neighborhoods.
Grymes Hill is famous for its main street, Vanderbilt Avenue. This tree-lined stretch is home to numerous restaurants including Denino’s Pizzeria & Tavern and the Grymes Hill Cafe. It also features many small boutiques, local shops, gourmet stores (i.e.: The Olive Branch), and Union Hotel.
Grymes Hill also has its own private bus line, known as the S91.
Grymes Hill has one public elementary school, P.S. 28 (located on Vanderbilt Avenue). Most students of Grymes Hill attend Joseph H. Wade Middle School and St. Peter’s Boys High School for high school, both of which are located within the neighborhood boundaries.
Notable people who grew up in and/or currently live in Grymes Hill: John F. Kennedy, Jr., Rose Groner, Marie McArthur (president of Wagner College), Arvid Smith (actor). and Mike McArthur (baseball player). Also, former Knicks basketball player John Starks.
