Bay Terrace is a residential neighborhood located on Staten Island’s North Shore, bordered by Tottenville to the south and Travis to the north. Locals call this neighborhood ‘East Meiers Corners’. The community is named for Bay Terrace, a series of hills along the waterfront, which offers impressive vistas of the Upper Bay and the Verrazano Bridge.

In 2010, a NY Times article named Bay Terrace as one of New York’s 10 ‘Best Places to Live’. The article stated that since 2000, the population in Bay Terrace has expanded by more than 20%, with families moving in from New Jersey, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.

Historically, Bay Terrace was an Irish, Italian and Polish neighborhood. Today, Bay Terrace is home to a diverse population including German, Russian, Indian, and Hispanic residents.

The neighborhood is known for its hilly landscape, with steep slopes between each street. The buyers are drawn to Bay Terrace’s ‘manicured lawns, spacious homes…and quiet streets.’ Predictably, the community is also well known for its network of stately trees and lush vegetation.

Houses range from one to three stories tall and are typically Colonial or Ranch style. The majority of homes were built between 1920 and 1950, but there are also ranch-style homes built in the 1960s.

Notable residents include former New York Giants owner Wellington Mara, who resided in Bay Terrace until his death in 2005.

Notable Places

Bay Terrace has a waterfront park called Father Capodanno Boulevard Park. Popular activities here include jogging, skating, and fishing.

Since the opening of MetLife Stadium in 2010, new retail stores have opened in the community including Target and Bed Bath & Beyond. Additionally, restaurants such as Chick-fil-A, Five Guys, Chipotle and Panera Bread have opened in recent years. Moreover, Bay Terrace is only ten minutes from the Staten Island Mall.

Calamari, pasta, and pizza can all be found in Bay Terrace at restaurants such as Casa Di Copani, Lelo’s, and Sal’s Pizzeria.

Bay Terrace is also home to vibrant nightlife. The Gate Lounge on Howard Avenue serves up cocktails and live music.

The neighborhood holds an annual fall festival named ‘Lansdowne by the Bay’. This event features games, rides, food vendors, and a fireworks show.

For recreation seekers, there are more than 20 public tennis courts, including six outdoor hard courts and 12 outdoor clay courts. There are also two public recreational basketball courts.

Public transportation includes the Staten Island Railroad’s Bay Terrace station. The SIR runs from Tottenville to St George, with stops at each of the North Shore communities along the way. Additionally, the SIR connects with the Staten Island Ferry.
