The township has 3 high schools: Henry P Rohlman high school, J M Bergen Regional High School, and Colonia High School.

Colonia has 5 public middle schools: Bruce A Van Saun Middle school, Elizabeth Avellar Middle school, Jefferson Avenue Middle school, John P Greenman Middle school, and Myra S Eisenberg Middle school. There are also several private Jewish day schools including Wolfson Yeshiva (K-12), Boyan Yeshiva (K-12), and Etz Chaim Day School (Pre K- 4).

Parks and Recreation

Colonia is home to the Lenape Park System which includes a boathouse, ball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields, tennis courts, biking trails, and a conservancy. The Lenape Park System is home to the Lenape Indians and is in close proximity to the Rahway River.

The township also has a recreation center which includes two swimming pools, racquetball courts, basketball courts, weight room and gymnasium. There is also an adjacent park with a playground.

Civil Structure

The township is under a Mayor-Council form of government where the mayor and council function as the governing body, with executive authority vested in the mayor. Councilmembers are elected at large to four-year staggered terms on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. The Township Council consists of seven members, with three members representing each of three wards, and one at-large council member, all of whom are elected to four-year terms on a staggered basis, with one ward seat and the at-large council seat up for election each year.

The township also hosts several large festivals each year including the Labor Day parade, Oktoberfest, and the Halloween carnival.

Colonia is located within close proximity to major highways including I-287, I-78, Route 1&9, US 9, NJ 35 , NJ 18 & NJ 17. It is 20 minutes away from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford which hosts the New York Giants and the New York Jets.

Located near Colonia, Woodbridge is a large shopping mall called the Menlo Park Mall. It features over 155 stores and a 16-screen movie theater. The Menlo Park Mall is a popular regional shopping center in the northern New Jersey/New York Metropolitan area.
