Junk Removal in Old Place, Staten Island, NY

Old Place is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is located near the foot of the Arthur Kill between Richmond Town and Rossville. The area has a total of about 105 houses or small businesses, with the majority being built in 1879. While most people had left Old Place by 1920, a new wave flooded in around 1990 to 2000 after Staten Island began losing population.

Old Place is home to many different types of houses and businesses. The oldest house currently standing in Old Place is a home built in 1762. There are also many homes that were built between 1880 and 1920, but many of these have been altered or expanded over the years. Largely influenced by the Staten Island Railroad line along Arthur Kill Road, the majority of the homes in Old Place are Victorian or Cape Cod style.

There is also a wide variety of businesses, including auto garages and car washes, laundromats, law offices, two churches (one Methodist and one Catholic), medical clinics, restaurants (including English, Irish and Asian cuisine), salons, beauty, and supplies store. While some of the homes have been abandoned, many are still inhabited by their owners and some new residents as well.

Old Place is a unique neighborhood with a diverse population averaging from all backgrounds and ages.

Visible from both the Staten Island Ferry and the Staten Island Railway, this small enclave of single-family homes seems out of place among the warehouses and industrial buildings that surround it on all sides.

Notable Places:

Old Place is home to the Staten Island Historical Society and also serves as a museum for historic artifacts and documents. The building was, at one point, an old schoolhouse built in 1853 and later became a general store before being returned to its original purpose as a museum.

Exhibits focus on local history, including information about the old Staten Island Railroad, stage lines that used to run across Arthur Kill Road, and an old Victorian farmhouse built in 1843.

Old Place is also home to the Old Place Library, which was created in 1969 by the community and later became a full-fledged library with both books and computers. The building was purchased in 1976 after the original owner passed, and it had been used as his home since 1950.

There are currently five existing churches in Old Place, all of which have been converted from former residences or commercial buildings.
