Woodrow is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is one of the many neighborhoods that comprise the Staten Island community. As a neighborhood, Woodrow is home to over 61,392 residents and is bound by Stroud Avenue to the north, Arthur Kill Road to the east, Narrows Road North to the south, and Bloomingdale Road to the west.

Although its boundaries are relatively simple compared with other NYC neighborhoods, Woodrow is composed of many distinct areas.

Woodrow is famous for Little League baseball, as the neighborhood was home to Lou Little during his career.

Most residents in Woodrow are families, and many of the young parents in the area work at Fresh Kills Landfill.

The Woodrow community is served by public transportation including the S40, S46, S52, and S54 buses. It also includes a ferry line that travels to Manhattan.

History

Woodrow was first settled in 1698 by Dutch immigrants. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Woodrow came into its own, however. Today it is considered one of Staten Island’s more desirable neighborhoods, having experienced an influx of families over the last decade.

Notable Places

Woodrow is home to many of Staten Island’s historic sites, including the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility and the Zabar’s factory. It is also home to many churches of different denominations, which provide spiritual guidance for residents.

Woodrow is home to many schools including PS 32, PS 36, Xaverian High School, St. Clare’s Elementary School, and one of the Staten Island’s few Montessori schools .

The Woodrow community features many green spaces, such as Historic Oakwood Cemetery. It is a beautiful place to enjoy the fall season and provides a tranquil resting place for those buried there.

Woodrow also has many restaurants, stores and other businesses to accommodate the everyday needs of its residents. Its main shopping district is along Clove Road, which features many chain stores as well as local, independently-owned shops.

Notable Residents

Notable residents of Woodrow include former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber, who now works for NBC Sports Network as an analyst. Tiki currently resides in neighboring St. George with his wife Ginny, who is co-founder of the non-profit organization “Ginny’s Team“.

Woodrow is also the home of assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis who serves New York City as a member of the New York City Council. Assemblywoman Malliotakis represents the people of Staten Island within the 51st District of New York State, and is chairperson of both the Subcommittee on Libraries and Educational Technology, and the Committee on Crime Victims, Also, Woodrow is home to author and Staten Islander, Frank Bonanno.
