Stapleton is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is an older neighborhood, with most of the homes being built in the early 1900s. Stapleton is located on a hill that slopes downward to New York Bay and contains many homes that have great water views. Stapleton is also near two major freeways, which makes it an easy commute into Manhattan or to surrounding areas for work or play.
Stapleton is famous for its recreational amenities. The Stapleton Houses are located between McClean Avenue, Broad Street, Tompkins Avenue, and Vanderbilt Avenue. A playground is found at each corner of the four avenues with basketball courts in between them. Just west of the Stapleton Houses is a dog run on Bay Street that is maintained by volunteers and provides dogs (and their owners) a place to run free.
Stapleton also includes a waterfront area that is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and hosts many events including concerts, beach parties, and arts/crafts fairs in its sheltered bayfront amphitheater.
The neighborhood is also close to many great parks, including the popular Conference House Park. The park has a rich history; it was used in 1776 for peace negotiations between Benjamin Franklin of the Continental Congress and Lord Howe of the British government. This gave Staten Island the nickname “Peaceable Isle” during this time period. A monument to these negotiations is located in the park, and it also features a playground.
Another popular attraction in this neighborhood is the Alice Austen House Museum, which was built in 1836. This historic landmark features antique furnishings and Victorian-era garden walks. The house is named after Alice Austen, who was an American professional photographer from Staten Island.
The neighborhood is also near Historic Richmond Town, which is a village with 20th-century Americana re-creations. This attraction includes antique homes and other historic buildings that are maintained as they would have been during their working years. It has educational programs to explore the history of this neighborhood.
For lunch or dinner, people can visit the popular Fran’s Restaurant. This destination has a family-style Italian menu with dishes like homemade lasagna or fettuccine alfredo. The restaurant also features some great desserts to complete your meal, including tiramisu and biscotti cheesecake.
For more traditional American fare, people should visit Mama D’s Italian Kitchen. This establishment has an American menu with burgers, sandwiches, and salads. For a more casual meal, people should visit Caffe Bene for coffee and snacks or breakfast foods like eggs and bacon.
