Shore Acres is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in all of New York City. Shore Acres is located in Staten Island’s West Shore, near New Jersey, south of Silver Lake.
Shore Acres is known for its high-end single-family homes and expansive lawns. Most of the houses sit on plots ranging from one to five acres in size. Most residents are of the upper class to very wealthy socioeconomic status, and the neighborhood is home to some of the most expensive homes in New York City. The neighborhood has a landscaped park on its northern end, along with panoramic views of New York Harbor.
Shore Acres was developed in 1907 by developer Clarence Stein. It received its name after a naming competition, as it was previously known as West New Brighton. The neighborhood’s homes were built in the custom-designed American Radburn style (also known as “cluster housing“), and its layout is considered to be a good example of that type of planning.
Shore Acres is easily accessible by car due to its proximity to the West Shore Expressway, and also via public transit. The neighborhood is also located roughly halfway between St. George Ferry Terminal and Tottenville station, both of which are served by express bus routes.
Shore Acres is also conveniently close to Staten Island Academy and St. Joseph Hill Academy, two private Catholic elementary schools. Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary is located just outside of the neighborhood on its southern border, along with St. Francis College.
Shore Acres has its own private golf course, while the surrounding neighborhood uses a public par-3 course. There are no schools in the area, but it is well-served by public transportation. It has two train stations—the Great Kills station on Staten Island Railway (SIR), and the Eltingville station on SIR and the Staten Island Ferry.
Shore Acres is home to one of Staten Island’s most notable features, Silver Lake. Silver Lake is a large, man-made lake surrounded by fine landscaping and dotted with small islands. It has an amphitheater where many community events are held. The neighborhood’s northern end includes 25-acre Dell Avenue Park, which contains two softball fields, four tennis courts, a playground, and Little League baseball diamonds.
Shore Acres has been home to a number of notable figures. Former United States Senator Al D’Amato grew up in Shore Acres, as did former New York City Police Commissioner Walter Mack. President Ronald Reagan‘s daughter Maureen lived in the neighborhood during her teenage years while attending St. Joseph Hill Academy, and his son Ron was an altar boy at St. Charles Borromeo Church.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani also grew up in Shore Acres, having lived on Delafield Avenue until he was six years old.
