Pleasant Plains is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is a part of the South Shore NY. The district is a peninsula that juts into the Arthur Kill Waterway from the Tom’s River and is located in ZIP Code 10314.
The area is a waterfront community that used to be a popular hunting and fishing spot. As parts of the neighborhood were developed, residents began to complain about sewage backups into their basements.
Pleasant Plains is popular with fishermen and is home to many species of fish including bluefish, striped bass, flounder, blackfish (tautog), weakfish (sea trout), oyster toadfish (oyster cracker), scup (porgy), and cunner.
The Arthur Kill Drainage Channel borders the neighborhood on the north. The channel is part of the area’s drainage system, which was built in the 1900s after much of the area succumbed to flooding due to severe thunderstorms.
Pleasant Plains is mostly semi-attached single-family homes, with some apartment buildings on the north side of Arthur Kill Road.
The houses are made out of brick or stone. Almost all of the houses have one garage for two cars and a driveway. The houses are very similar to each other, but most have shrubs and trees in the front yard. The median age for residents in Pleasant Plains is approximately 40 years old.

Pleasant Plains has landmarks such as Pleasant Plains Presbyterian Church, Pleasant Plains Fire House, and Pleasant Plains Water Company.
It also has the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, which is a prison that has male and female inmates.
Pleasant Plains also has St. John’s University Staten Island Campus, which has about 4,700 students. It also has two private schools: St. Charles Borromeo Regional School and St. Joseph Hill Academy.
