Oakwood has a diverse population of multi-racial white, Latino, and black families. It is also home to the upstate campus of St. John’s University and many students live here as well.

History

Oakwood was developed by Richard Saffir in the late 1960s. It originally consisted of 60 ranch homes on two-acre lots, but now consists of about ten percent of that number due to splits and re-subdivision.

Education

Oakwood once had its own elementary school called P.S. 32 which served the neighborhood from 1912 to 1981 when it closed down due to diminished enrollment and aging facilities. Before closing though it was given a last chance when in 1979 it became the first elementary school in Staten Island to be designated as a “School to Watch” by the New York State Department of Education. In 2006, P.S. 32 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, Oakwood is home to two public schools: JHS 39 and MS 53 the Staten Island School of Civic Leadership.

Oakwood is also home to several institutions of higher learning. Venard College, a private, not-for-profit coeducational junior college has been in Oakwood since 1969 offering associate degree programs in Art and Science. It currently occupies what were formerly the campus buildings of St. John’s University, which in 1969 moved to its present campus in the Todt Hill section of Staten Island. The College is named after Dr. Hazzard R. Venard who was a lifetime resident of Oakwood and a one-time member of the community board for that neighborhood.

Notable Places

Oakwood neighborhood has several churches, two cemeteries, an art studio, and a gallery called the Marina Art Studio & Gallery. The local shopping district is along Hylan Boulevard just east of the Staten Island Railway tracks.

It also has a community center and a public library.
