Manor Heights was a rural area just outside New York City, and was known as “the suburbs”. During World War II, it became an industrial site with various manufacturing companies looking for space near New York Harbor.
The neighborhood was largely depopulated by the 1960s as factories began to close. In the 1980s and 1990s, Manhattan architects began to move into Manor Heights, which reduced crime and led to the stabilization of the neighborhood.
Today, the neighborhood is increasingly populated by professionals and young families. The layout of Manor Heights consists of many one-family homes and low-rise apartment buildings.
Manor Heights is serviced by a number of school districts. Elementary school children attend P.S 54, I.S 51, and I.S 80 for grammar school education and have options to transfer to Port Richmond High School or New Dorp High School for high school education. There are also many private schools in the area as well as a small College of Staten Island campus offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Manor Heights is home to Staten Island’s South Shore branch of the New York Public Library.
