Heartland Village is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is included in the Staten Island Census county division (CCD).
The boundaries of Heartland Village are Todt Hill Road to the north, Hylan Boulevard to the east, Richmond Avenue to the west, and Bradley Ave. to the south. Its southern border is split by New Dorp Lane which runs east-west just south of Bradley Avenue.
Heartland Village is mostly residential with many detached, single-family homes. While small apartment buildings do exist (five to six stories), this is not a neighborhood of high rises. Although the area was not developed until the 1930s, there are quite a number of older structures in Heartland Village, some dating back as far as the early 1800s.
The older structures were built by wealthy factory owners who lived in the area at that time. These homes are found on Bloomingdale Road, Todt Hill Road, and Hylan Boulevard.
Heartland Village is a relatively small, middle-class residential area of Staten Island. The area was planned and developed in the 1930s by William H. Burr, with infrastructure such as streets and sewers built out to the neighborhood before any homes were constructed. The original layout consisted of large lots and wide streets and was designed with an eye towards both grandeur and comfort.
The neighborhood was originally planned to be a gated community, with gates at the intersections of Todt Hill Road and Hylan Boulevard, and Richmond Avenue and Bloomingdale Road. However, while the other two entrances still stand (albeit without gates), only the entrance at Hylan/Todt Hill is still accessible.
The entrance at Richmond Avenue was closed when the Staten Island Expressway was built in the 1960s, and the Bloomingdale Road entrance has been closed for a much longer period of time. Originally a neighborhood within New Brighton, it became part of an expanded New Dorp when that neighborhood was formed in 1975.
Heartland Village is surrounded by important historical sites, such as the historic Fort Wadsworth, which was built in 1776 for strategic purposes.
There are also several cemeteries located nearby; however, most of these are actually located within the boundaries of Todt Hill.
St. Peter’s Cemetery (with an entrance on Bloomingdale Road) is one of the largest cemeteries on Staten Island. It shares a border with Heartland Village, which means that the northern part of Bloomingdale Road actually lies within this cemetery.
Many famous Staten Islanders have lived in Heartland Village. Among them are Christopher Walken, an Academy Award-winning actor known for “The Deer Hunter“, “King of New York“, and “A View to a Kill“, Dan Donohue, an actor on the ABC daytime drama “One Life to Live“, and Lisa G., a former member of The Pussycat Dolls.
