Because Hamilton Park is situated on a hill and surrounded by several creeks, the area used to be called “Hilltop Station.” Before European settlement, the area of Staten Island where Hamilton Park now exists was home to various Native American tribes. Development of the Hamilton Park neighborhood began in the mid 18th century and ended around 1929.

Construction on a farm road, called Richmond Turnpike, through Hamilton Park led to the increased settlement of Staten Island and served as the main connection between Staten Island and New Jersey until 1860. After railroads were introduced to Staten Island in 1862, Hamilton Avenue was built and served as the main thoroughfare for Staten Island until the construction of the West Shore Expressway in 1960.

Today, Hamilton Park is made up of modest single-family homes that are primarily owner-occupied.
