History

Grasmere is a small village on Staten Island with a rich and colorful history and many attractions within its borders. The neighborhood was originally called Coney Island Point, and did not become known as Grasmere until 1911 when the village was formally named. The neighboring town of Port Richmond is often included in Grasmere’s history and also has a very interesting past.

Griffith, a British Army officer from Port Richmond, built the first structure in the area of Grasmere. Being directly opposite of New York, direct access to Manhattan was always considered important by early settlers. In fact, it was only during the 1970s that the Bayonne Bridge was erected and completed, which made traveling between Staten Island and New Jersey much easier. This also allowed for the construction of the West Shore Expressway, which helped Staten Islanders reach New Jersey much faster.
