Elm Park is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is a suburb of NYC.
Elm Park’s demographics are a part of the larger borough of Staten Island, and it is on the North Shore, with an eastern border at Richmond Terrace and western shore along Lower New York Bay. Elm Park is also very close to the infamous Oakwood Heights neighborhood. This former community was once one of Staten Island’s most upscale communities, and it housed a large Jewish population, who built many schools and synagogues here.
Homes in Elm Park date to the 1920s. The neighborhood is named for a small band of elm trees that once stood on Park Avenue.
The only notable place near Elm Park is the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, which features many historic buildings and gardens.
The primary mode of transportation in Elm Park is the automobile. However, there are no connecting bus lines within this community. The closest form of public transportation is via Staten Island Railway at Forest Avenue Station, which is about half a mile away.
Elm Park was the only place in Staten Island where African Americans could buy homes during the early 1900s. In 1905, David H. Overton purchased land from John J. Bouligny and sold it to black families as a result of the 1824 New York state law that prohibited African Americans from owning property but did not restrict them from renting. By 1913, nearly 100 black families lived in Elm Park.
This historic community is very close-knit even to this day, with many family lineages able to be traced back for centuries here.
Elm Park has an interesting history. A few of its most notable figures include the NBA Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens, who once coached the Seattle Supersonics to their only championship in 1979; and NFL wide receiver Leon Harris, who currently plays for the New Orleans Saints. Additionally, one of its streets is named after Frances Cleveland, the youngest First Lady of the United States.
Elm Park is served by New York Public School PS 36 at 333 Buel Avenue. It is also served by two Catholic schools: St. Teresa’s R.C. Elementary School and St. Charles/St. Michaels Middle School, both of which are located on Seguine Avenue.
It also borders several private schools, including St. Charles by the Sea and St. Joseph Hill Academy.
New York Public Library operates the Dorothy Westerman Brinn Library at 18 Brinn Place in Elm Park. This library is home to a collection of 5,000 books and periodicals and serves roughly 3,500 residents in this area alone.
