Concord is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY, and is the first neighborhood the Staten Island Railway passes through. It is bordered on the west by Bloomingdale Road, on the east by Targee Street, on the northeast by Henderson Avenue, and on the south by Cary Avenue.
The population in Concord is made up of people who are primarily White, Hispanic or Latino, Asian, and of two or more races. The neighborhood is also known for its very low crime rate. Most residents are between the ages of 15 and 44.
There are two ferries serving Concord; one is the Arthur Kill Boat which leaves from Staten Island to Elizabethport, NJ and the other is the Whitehall Street Ferry to Manhattan.
Concord is served by the Staten Island Railway via Concord Station, which provides access to Midtown Manhattan in about twenty-five minutes.
The major road in Concord is Bloomingdale Road, which heads eastbound to the Staten Island Expressway. The other major roads are Targee Street, Henderson Avenue, and Bay Street. These roads provide access to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge via NY 440 (Gowanus Expressway).
According to some residents who had lived in the neighborhood a long time, Concord was to have been part of a planned Staten Island Ferry from Staten Island to Brooklyn. The neighborhood also used to be known as “Concord Station.”
Historically, Concord was part of the Town of Castleton, which was established in 1711. Staten Island became a borough in 1898 and the town ceased to exist at that time.
The current neighborhood’s borders were established in 1975 when parts of New Brighton and Port Richmond Estates seceded from these two respective neighborhoods.
Concord has a large part of its area occupied by a few city parks including Katan Hill Recreation Area and Landmann Hill Recreation Area.
Concord is also home to the smallest public library branch in Staten Island, which is part of the New York Public Library it was opened in May 1976 and its collections include more than 20,000 items.
It is famous for having the last remaining Shakey’s Pizza Parlor on Staten Island which opened in 1981.
The neighborhood also has two churches, Concord Baptist Church and St. Andrew R.C. Church, as well as many businesses along Bloomingdale Road and Bay Street including a Rite Aid store.
One notable person that is from Concord is David Fizdale, who is a former NBA player and current head coach of the NBA’s New York Knicks. He grew up in Concord and attended Curtis High School where he played his high school basketball.
There are several schools in the Concord area, including Intermediate School 7, which is located at 645 Henderson Avenue. The building formerly housed P.S. 22 until 1986 when the school was burned down while under construction and then rebuilt.
Concord has one public elementary school, P.S. 382 Concord Elementary School, located on Targee Street.
Nearby private schools include St. Joseph Hill Academy, located on Jersey Street in New Brighton, and Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, which is also in New Brighton.
