Junk Removal in Castleton Corners, Staten Island, NY

Castleton Corners is a neighborhood in Staten Island, NY. The neighborhood itself has a wide range of styles and prices, though most homes are larger detached single-family homes. The community sits in the eastern corner of Staten Island, which borders New Jersey. The neighborhood is southwest of New Brighton and east by way of the Arthur Kill shoreline path along Richmond Valley. Most streets are narrow with few sidewalks, which leads to territorial driving patterns where streets are treated as extensions of driveways.

History

The neighborhood was once home to many Italian immigrants who came in search of work during the 1930s. These early settlers worked for companies like Bethlehem Steel and Standard Chemical, both of which offered employment opportunities on Staten Island. Many of these immigrants began their own small businesses or found jobs in local shops. Often they went into farming. The area around Castleton Corners is now mostly suburban, but there are still some farms.

The neighborhood itself was originally known as “Ponanunk” by the natives of its land, though it wasn’t officially inhabited until around the turn of the century. In 1890 a small group of houses was constructed along Amboy Road and within a few years, the area had been named Castleton Corners because of its location on what was then a train station that ran from Staten Island to Philadelphia via Trenton, NJ. The original settlement was very small but by 1905 it had become a proper town made up of neighborhoods and boroughs. Many homes in this neighborhood have basements, which is rare for houses on Staten Island.

Castleton Corners is now mostly suburban and middle class, though it still has a sizable working-class population as well as some upper-middle-class families. The people are very friendly with open arms for new neighbors to the community. There are local social clubs, restaurants, shops and other businesses.
