Arlington is a neighborhood located in Staten Island, NY, and is part of Staten Island’s east shore. Arlington is bound on the east by Tottenville and on the north by a landfill that separates it from Travis. To the west lies New Springville, and to the south, Charleston. Arlington is the largest neighborhood on Staten Island, both in size and population.
Arlington is home to the Staten Island Mall, one of the larger shopping centers on Staten Island. The neighborhood is also home to Tottenville High School, St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, and P.S. 5 (Staten Island). John D’Amato Field is home to the Staten Island Yankees (formerly the Brooklyn Cyclones) and the annual Clove Lake Holiday Lights Spectacular. The youth of Arlington are served by Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League baseball, youth centers, YMCA/YWCA, and the police department’s Police Athletic League (PAL).
Arlington, State Island, NY, has unique places to visit such as the Tottenville Pool and the Staten Island Mall. Between the Tottenville Pool and Staten Island Mall, there is a great place called Ruby’s. Ruby’s is a family restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner at low prices.
Arlington was located on the island’s fringe, which made it subject to flooding from the nearby Fresh Kills and other waterways. This resulted in a number of houses being washed away or moved back from the shoreline as part of land reclamation efforts.
In 1884 John T. Stephenson bought 600 acres of land on Staten Island’s east shore with an idea to create a reservoir that could supply the entire island with water. The project was later abandoned and Stephenson began subdividing the land into tracts, believing that a community of wealthy city residents would be interested in building homes within easy access to New York City. He named it “Arlington”, after Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C., and by 1886, Stephenson’s vision began to take shape when he sold 200 acres of land in what was known as “Stephenson Park”.
Arlington continued to grow and became a community devoted to wealthy New Yorkers looking for an escape from city life. The community became even more accessible with the opening of the Staten Island Railway’s Arlington station in 1893.
The neighborhood of Arlington was once home to Phyllis Diller, as well as members of numerous U.S. Congresses, including former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who also grew up in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Northport from where she often returns to visit family and friends still living there today.
